PROJECT | COMPOSIT | the Future use of Composites in Transport | 2002-04 | EC FP5 Thematic Network promoting knowledge transfer and best practice in the use of composite materials within the transport system.

The COMPOSIT thematic network brought together researchers, designers, manufacturers and end-users of composite materials across the aerospace, automotive and rail industries. The mechanism for this "bringing together" was a series of ten workshops to be held throughout 2002-04. Each workshop addressed a specific theme or issue relating to the use of composites in transport by providing a forum for comparison, collaboration and cross-fertilisation between the different sectors. The intention was to encourage knowledge transfer and promote best practice in the use of composites within the transport system.

As a result, a number of clusters with unique information were created as well as three key documents, the final industry reports, stating the composites research capabilities and needs in the aerospace, automotive and rail sectors.

PROJECT | PRECIMOULD | High Precision Composites Moulding Prediction of Distortion Using Analytical Methods | 1997-2001.

Advanced composite materials are one of the main keys to lightweight, energy efficient structures for Next Generation Aircraft. Unfortunately, there is a serious technical and economic barrier to their cost effective application in areas where accuracy is critical, due to the uncontrolled and largely unpredictable distortion which occurs during the moulding stage. The purpose of this research project was to:
-develop an analytical method and associated database for predicting distortion phenomena;
-to create a materials and processing model to ensure that the production moulding process can be specified and controlled to achieve consistent high precision and reduce scrap rates to less than 5%.

public final report.

PROJECT | CORONET | European Research Infrastructure Network | 2001-04 | EC FP5.

The primary objective of CORONET is: “To stimulate the exchange of knowledge and best-practice in thermoplastic composites and to increase access to research infrastructures”. The network had 18 members is 9 different countries. It produced 3 main reports, namely,

ON-LINE RESOURCE | Composite Materials Handbook |

The Composite Materials Handbook provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. Its primary purpose is the standardization of engineering data development methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and data reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials.

Document | European Charter for Researchers & Code of Conduct for Recruitment of Researchers.

The European Commission has adopted a European Charter for Researchers and a Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. These two documents, addressed to researchers as well as to employers and funders in both the public and private sectors, are key elements in the European Union's policy to make research an attractive career, which is a vital feature of its strategy to stimulate economic and employment growth.
